From sense "to extend", denoting the moon's "extending" phase, i.e. waxing half-moon with a concave edge (Smith, 2010).
For its association with the monkey, compare Proto-Tai *liːŋᴬ (monkey), Proto-Hmong *ʔlinᴬ (monkey), and Proto-Mien *ʔbiŋᴬ (monkey).
“Shanghai”
