cdm logoVIENNA – Montenegro expects to access the European Union (EU) in the next five years, foreign minister Srđan Darmanović said today during the talks with Austrian MPs in Vienna, CdM reports.

He pointed out that if all went well, then Montenegro could become an EU member state as soon as in 2022.

Darmanović said that the only appropriate response to Brexit was continuing EU enlargement and accepting countries of the Western Balkans into the European family.

He said that, in this respect, he expected the support of Austria, Tanjug news agency reports.

When it comes to security policy, Darmanović said Montenegro aspired to become a member of NATO, calling in mind that the EU accepted post-communist countries only after their accession to this military alliance.

MP for the Social Democratic Party of Austria Josef Cap said he saw no contribution to Europe’s security in expanding NATO, adding that close economic cooperation with Russia was the best security policy.

Freedom Party MPs also supported dialogue with Russia and sharply criticised the EU sanctions against Moscow.
