blo.gs has been acquired by yahoo!

the sale of blo.gs has been completed, and i'm proud to announce that yahoo! has acquired the service. as of right now, give or take a few minutes, yahoo! is running blo.gs.

this is the sort of good home that i was looking for — yahoo! obviously has the resources to run and improve blo.gs in pace with the incredible growth of blogs (and syndication in general), and in talking with them it was also clear that we had some of the same vision for the future of the service and the ping/notification infrastructure.

for users of the website and the cloud interface, nothing much is changing. the service will continue to be completely open, and both yahoo! and i hope you continue to use it and help it grow.

even though i’ll no longer be operating blo.gs, i'm not going to disappear from the community. i’m still very interested in blogging and syndication, and believe that blo.gs will continue to have a major impact as a key player in the evolving ping and blogging infrastructure.

some people have asked about the privacy policy during the transition. yahoo! is keeping the blo.gs privacy policy. the data collected on blo.gs will continue to be subject to that privacy policy and you will be given the opportunity to consent to future changes.

more: some thanks for those who made this all happen.

Good to hear! I have to admit I was fearing a transfer the likes of another pinging service's (*cough*blogrolling*cough*), but I have the utmost confidence in Yahoo! Now I can breathe a sigh of relief - I won't have to recode my blogroll (which now uses blo.gs xml feeds) for the second time in a year! yipee!

What geeky said. Sounds like an excellent match, congratulations!

Jim, not that you're taking tech support requests anymore, but I seemed to have lost my ability to figure out new/old blogs in the firefox pane view. It used to track blogs that I had already seen by visited link color, but now they just show up as all new every time I open the sidebar tab.

Congrats I'm glad it was Yahoo since it wasn't me. I wish that I could have bought it. My stock isn't worth like Yahoo and Yahoo has their MoJo back. Congrats Jim.

Jim what I like about you is that you were always up front with me when I inquired to buy blo.gs and you subscribed to the 'say what you mean and you do what you say' views during our discussions - hopefully others will do the same when they bring on partners.

» John Furrier (link) » june 14, 2005 2:01pm

Congrats Jim! Excellent. What's next?

» John Robb » june 14, 2005 2:14pm

Hey, Jim -- any chance you'd disclose a ballpark figure for what Yahoo! paid for blo.gs?

» Dossy (link) » june 14, 2005 3:19pm

no.

» jim (link) » june 14, 2005 3:29pm

For my own curiousity -- are you choosing not to? (I assume so.) Are you contractually forbidden from doing so? (I also assume so.)

The reason I was hoping there'd be some ballpark figure is to get a post-bubble valuation of what a web property like blo.gs is worth these days.

Thanks anyway, and good luck with whatever you take on, next.

» Dossy (link) » june 14, 2005 3:48pm

Ah nice, good home too!

» Dave (link) » june 14, 2005 5:56pm

Congrats jim, with your ideas and their pockets... i know i can only expect good things from this :)

» mariano (link) » june 14, 2005 8:18pm

I am really loving how Yahoo is buying things like Flickr and now Blo.gs and implementing more services that are feature-filled and make money that way, through upgrades and such, rather than through constant ads (old tactics). Hopefully they'll do the same with blo.gs for long-term.

I wonder if they are going to integrate it into the 360 service? I haven't been a blogger long, but I like blo.gs. Glad to see Yahoo! fighting back!

» Irvin Owens Jr (link) » june 24, 2005 6:48am

Can't wait to see a nice tight integration with 360, Flickr, MyWeb and blo.gs.

Sounds great! If a billion dollar corporation wanted to purchase a site of mine, I would be extremely happy to say the least.

» some_young_guy (link) » november 21, 2005 12:26pm

Now that search has been disabled for ... weeks? Months? ... what are we supposed to do when we want to add a new weblog to our lists?

Is there a schedule for fixing this?

What's really going on here? The situation is causing me a significant problem with my web page, because I rely on the blo.gs information.

Somebody please let us know what's going on!

» Ralph (link) » november 30, 2005 4:08am

Great, Yahoo is using all now, and what are your next step?:-))

» Heinz (link) » december 12, 2005 9:40am

I totally agree with what you're saying. I wish more people felt this way and took the time to express themselves. Keep up the great work.

» jim (link) » november 14, 2006 2:22am

Hi,

Thats great news !

When is the bounce back happening and can we expect any new features to add.

» Rocky (link) » october 24, 2007 2:18am

Hi,

I'm new to blogging and followed the link to blo.gs from an article on blogging. Most of the recommended resources are no longer online, so I felt happy to see that this service still exists. I use a non-standard blog on my site and wanted to test if it works with services which use standard technologies. So far I've found it does, so I'm happy with my software, and well, belated congrats to rhe founder of this service and to Yahoo for keeping the flame alive.

» Anthony (link) » january 29, 2008 4:00pm

doesn't look like Yahoo has done much with the site?
