Delicious is 5!

5 years oldYes, it’s kind of hard to believe, but we’ve been chugging along for five years now.  In that time a huge number of people have made Delicious a part of their online lives.  We’re now up to 5.3 million users.  And with over 180 million unique URLs saved, together we have built a community resource that just keeps getting more interesting and more useful.

We took some major steps forward this year, including launching the new Delicious, releasing our new Internet Explorer add-on, and making major updates to our Firefox add-on.

Thanks for your continued support, and thanks for using Delicious!

Thank you for a great service! For more years to come.

P.S. Yahoo search blog says you have 5.8 million, while here is 5.3.

Don’t want to be a number nazi but still.

I’m not exactly sure how I used to bookmark before delicious, but I think it involved saving a ton of stuff, never being able to find it, and then losing it all when I my hard drive crashed.

Thanks for the great service and happy birthday!

How many of those URLs are to spam sites?
What is the estimated percentage of users who are suspect spammers?

Happy birthday Delicious — and goodbye.

After three years of using this service to keep readers of my blog updated, I can no longer tolerate the erratic and unhelpful behavior of Delicious since its vaunted recent “upgrade.” My posting bookmarklet now asks me to log in with annoying frequency — not every “2 weeks” (though I do not understand why that change was mandated, either), but sometimes every 2 days.

You know, maybe I was just an anomalous user for Delicious. I actually used it to build content for my home page using a customized version of its headline badge. I loved it because I could write my own exciting headlines and not settle for the dull ones at the sites I was linking my readers to.

Eventually, though, I found Google Reader’s feature set more to my liking, as I could scan 1000 headlines and with one click, publish them to my blog. Even then, however, I continued to use Delicious to generate customized headlines that I could then approve in Reader.

Still, I always thought Delicious should have been smoothly integrated with Yahoo’s search and RSS functionality to create a Google Reader on steroids. Instead, Yahoo decided to keep Delicious pretty much as a one-trick pony. Even worse, it kept its login separate from Yahoo — which is doubly unfortunate because at least for me, login is broken. It doesn’t keep me signed in for 2 weeks.

Delicious, in short, joins Flickr as products that have made remarkably little progress since being sucked into the Yahoo pod. That, and the recent downgrade in ease of use brought about by the “upgrade,” have forced me to move on. When I release my new website design later this month, for the first time since mid-2005 it will not have Delicious in it.

  • ani625  |  Nov 6 2008 at 7:00 pm

    Congrats delicious!
This remains one my favs despite its recent ‘downgrade’.

Now, the next steps should be custom domain names for your delicious account and the ability to customize the design.

Obrigado.

    Happy birthday!
    I love this service.
I hope the next 5 years site crew could work seriously on internationalization. For those who tag using another language, availability of user’s native tongue is a serious obstacle to network growing.

  • Britta Gustafson  |  Nov 20 2008 at 2:27 am

valeria: You can use the bookmarklet buttons at http://delicious.com/help/bookmarklets

simon: You may be able to use a linkroll, or use a Blogger RSS widget to import your bookmarks RSS feed (look at the bottom of your bookmarks to see the orange icon with a link to this feed). For the Facebook page, see this thread.

I’ve been using Delicious for the past two years, and I must say that the change in URL is definitely a welcome one. It is not even funny how many times I had to explain why the URL was written in that way, only to get a phone call later on saying that the person can’t get it right. Simpler is better, and may Delicious grow from strength to strength over the next 5 years!
