Together we’ll continue to improve how people discover, remember and share on the Internet, with a big emphasis on the power of community. We’re excited to be working with the Yahoo! Search team – they definitely get social systems and their potential to change the web. (We’re also excited to be joining our fraternal twin Flickr!)

We want to thank everyone who has helped us along the way – our employees, our great investors and advisors, and especially our users. We still want to get your feedback, and we look forward to bringing you new features and more servers in the future.

I look forward to continuing my vision of social and community memory, and taking it to the next level with the del.icio.us community and Yahoo!

Yahoo! doesn’t “get” “social systems(s)”…it abuses on-line communities and violates their members. Their “social systems(s)” become marketing gulags.

Uh, folks, Google does have something in the works, available now. Turn on Google Search History, then at some point go in and look at your history. Star items you want to remember. When you star something, an “Edit bookmark” link becomes visible. Click it and you’ll be able to enter labels (tags) and notes, just like you can here.

Not saying it’s as easy to use or anything, it’s certainly too many clicks for me, but I bet Google already is preparing more bookmark tools to integrate with Google search.

I don’t know if Yahoo has a tendency to inject ads into the services they aquire, but if it happens do del.icio.us I plan on being very upset. This is horrible news, great for the money, but Yahoo ruins everything it touches, it totally messed up and shut down Broadcast.com, (AKA AudioNet) They crapped on the WebRing, and wound up selling it back. WebRing still looks like a crappy Yahoo site.

Congratulations for the sale, but like many users here, I am afraid Yahoo! will eventually just screw this one up like they have every other service they offer. And yes, I understand the need to be economically sound and all that (it’s capitalism after all), but why is it when the giant buys it usually means whatever the good idea was goes downhill? Oh well, I will wait and see, since I was just starting to like del.icio.us. However, I will likely go looking for some other place down the road if the way Yahoo! treats its other services is an indication.

Yeah! flickr, del.icio.us, and my webhost all under one roof. This is great news, and means del.icio.us will be around for a long time.

Let’s just hope Yahoo keeps the same aesthetic that has made del.icio.us so popular, and doesn’t go “fixing” anything along the way… (They’ve been good with flickr, so I doubt that’ll be the case, but y’know, gotta be wary of big corporations.)

While Yahoo eventually learned not to mess with community through their missteps with Flickr, remember that most of the things Yahoo touches turn ugly. Banner ads. Pop-up ads. Commercial interstitials. They are just too bloated.

Too bad. I really enjoyed using delicious over the past few months and would rather stay put. Maybe I will wait a bit & see what happens.

I’m happy for Josh and everybody at del.icio.us, but like many of the above commenters, I’m dubious about Yahoo!’s plans for a lean-and-mean community site that I use almost every day.

1. The waters will be deeply stirred here if I have to use a Yahoo! account to sign in.

2. Ad injection and spamming. Those are deal-breakers as far as I’m concerned.

Congrats, this is great news for both companies, but especially Joshua. Yahoo gets to update their original “directory for the web” aesthetic and tagging gets released to the general population. I’m surprised at all the naysayer here – if you don’t want ads, why don’t you suggest a payment method, since nothing worth having is free. I’ve had a Yahoo ID for a long time, and my flickr account hasn’t suffered so what’s the real problem here? Any net savvy person (like every del.icio.us user) has learned how to ignore web ads in all of their itineration for years already.

I wonder if the creators of online communities feel any obligation toward the members that make them what they are. The idea did not make del.icio.us or Flickr the sensation that they became; it is the contributors that set them apart from hundreds of other locations on the web. Yahoo! will ruin del.icio.us, without conscience, without blinking. I have, in a very small way, contributed to the success of del.icio.us, every member has. What end-users need is a one-stop shop or a few-stop shops to meet their daily needs. If I can get most of it at either Google or Yahoo, awesome! Consolidation benefits the end customers as much as the companies coming together. Also, both G and Y! are competing to deliver better services, and both understand the importance of social networking. So, this acquisition can only be good for the end users.

i develop a cooll product. /.ers and diggers jump in and it becomes talk of the town.. everybody loves it, so do i.. we all get attached to it. we become soooo attached that we fall in love with it. we dont want to lose it.

now comes some f’ed up company and offers to buy it… we weigh pros and cons… we love it too much.. we show them the finger. we are loyal to our geeks and software. we provide more functionality.. stupid /.ers and digger love us more…

now comes ya.hoo. they put an offer on table, which cannot be resisted.. we resist for couple of days, months.. then they increase the offer. we start weighing pros and cons.

is it ok to ditch /.ers and diggers for the money??? we can buy new chairs, settle in our lives, have nice decent house. alright we can screw the people, they are not going be around, if we lose popularity, they are not going to give us money, if del.icio.us is overtaken in popularity by Google, M$ or Yahoo.

so, i/we decide to take money and advance our lives..

I understand you probably got plenty of $$$ in the deal, and I can respect that, but every time Yahoo buys up a service I use it inevitably loses functionality and a requirement to have a Yahoo ID, complete with “We can spam you all we like, and if you don’t like it, delete your account” EULA.

Guess it’s time to go look for another bookmarking service…

I don’t care so much about some ads, but have you folks thought about this: del.icio.us can only be as good as its users, the quality of the community is what makes this site special. If brought down to Yahoo average by quantity, del.icio.us/popular will be just gossip. movie and celebs stuff.

All I hope is that Yahoo doesn’t change del.icio.us for the worse.

Yahoo clearly botched up the Flickr sign-up screen, which would obviously detract new visitors from signing up. (Thankfully upcoming.org — now a Yahoo company — still retains much of its old flavour).

I just hope that Yahoo allows del.icio.us to operate largely “independent” of the Yahoo network, and that del.icio.us remains the simple, elegant and efficient web service that we’ve grown to love.

(One nice feature that I’d like to see for sure is for the new del.icio.us to support saving the web page bookmarked — pretty much the way furl.net does it)

This is probably the worst news I’ve heard in ages. I’m a long time user of del.icio.us and love it’s simple interface, open standards, ad free, and extensability.

Joshua, please provide some more information on how del.icio.us will mutate under the yahoo banner.

4. Firefox extension to post?

The future of delicious is at stake. I care as i use it almost every day. I’m not concerned about the creator’s financial life.

That should really not be part of the picture if many thousand people use an environment. It’s tricky to turn a service over to a commercial giant when thousands trusted this as a free community place. If I now have to think of del.icio.us as part of the Yahoo “family.” The obfuscation of what is a business relationship is cynical. I’m in too deep to pull out but I think this business deal really impacts other “free” and “open” environments. How do you turn the online many into corporate work horses? Here, you go. Your service did actually transformed the web.

A focused service. A concrete idea. An AJAX little wonder.

You were also a Web 2.0 role model. A potential profitable initiative. A unique alternative and, under the lenses of analysts and columnists: a “less is perfect” example.

I assume del.icio.us could not be profitable to “that” extent through some other path (some 37signals.com sayings, tips and strategies for web enterprises come to my mind now); but of course the reasons for this deal are as valid as they are yours.

Let me say it was terrible for me to “homologuise” my Flick/Yahoo accounts… Yahoo! inspires me nothing. It is a constant remembrance of the way old dotcom-ism worked. While Google innovates now, Yahoo! buys. (Proof me wrong, I am opened)

Anyway, this was intended to be constructive criticism (sorry it did not happen… I am totally, totally concerned now to do so). So, I want to congratulate you guys for this personal achievement (the Yahoo! “family” deal) and thank you for social bookmarking at its best.

I am looking forward for the new ideas this new money SHALL/MOST/COULD bring to the service. I’ll stick to del.icio.us, even I’ll shrug at every Yahoo! logo; I trust the ideological loss SHALL/COULD/MOST be minimal, in front of the valuable tool this has been. And yes!! Please think about us people first; we users did also make del.icio.us… priceless?

One guy says Konfubulator bought by Yahoo is a bad thing. Come on man, Apple STOLE THEIR INVENTION (no stone age examples please), they did an amazing favor to community of BOTH operating systems (win32 and OS X prior to 10.4) buying such a good coded application and providing it free.

If there are people here saying sh*t about Konfubulator purchase even, I say don’t give a sh*t to comments!

I just wonder for sake of ethics. People even giving example of China (while Google practices cencor to them in results) has connection (adwords $$$) with Google?

Google censors whole 1 billion+ countries results, they practiced censor about scientology before and someone comes up with some jerk doing spy like stuff and getting jailed.

The comments seem to be divided between hearty congratulations and ‘yahoo sucks’. I must say when yahoo acquired flickr I was a bit unsettled but so far they’ve done OK (yes, people are forced to use yahoo login. Poor you, soooo inconvenient).

Some lessons to learn here:

1- Never trust a startup service to store your important data no matter how the owner seems honest to you. Sooner or later he/she will run away with the money and YOUR data.

2- Never trust a corporate entity to continue storing your important data. Now that they stole your data, you are subjected to the user-specific ads and they abuse you no matter how strong you cry.

3- Never act like a fanboy on services you don\’t trust. Instead, invest your time and knowledge on open source projects to ensure your efforts are never sold to third party evils.

It’s obvious to me that Yahoo! still doesn’t get it. Reading the above post confirms that impression. They’re busy buying hot properties and Yahoofying them. Yahoo! Music is a good example of a dot-com company trying to make the transition to a Web 2.0 company without respecting user data or UIs. Terrible.

i agree with the consensus here, in this world of economic tyranny called capitalism, no one can stand in front of the giants. when the guys with the suits and sunglasses come with milliondollars in their bags, it’s hard to refuse them. del.icio.us is/was a tool that gave hope to me for a better life. Last 6 months or so have seen me trying to get everyone to use del.icio.us and explain how wonderful a thing it is, or how the web2.0 democracy is going to change social life and maybe one day help us bring the corporations down..

this is a significant battle that’s lost, it has once again shattered our dreams that a world without money, or a world of total democracy, a world without ads, a world without guys in suits enjoying in their yachts is possible.. apart from that, i really don’t care if there’s ads or yahoo logins or whatever, i don’t click ads anyways, the important part is once again a major company has checkmated a smaller company into being bought. I don’t think there’s any other move other than accepting to be bought in this position.

Well, at least you could have submitted to Google! and not the antagonist!

Wow, time to find a competing service. Anyone have any suggestions? Don’t forget Yahoo! has become evil ever since they acquire Overture. They account for about 20-25% of the revenue of some of the worst spyware vendors out there (Claria, 180, DirectRevenue-VX2)

Not to mention their sick compliance with demands from the Chinese governemnt.

i get the feeling that Joshua is now just another yahoo employee. i sure hope he got stock options and pocked a few million. even though he will prob have to stay a employee of yahoo for a while. i remember when yahoo was paying a billion dollars for crap like broadcast.com – now they get dirtcheap prices on new and hot web properties. the real problem is that good services like this one cannot survive independantly – users dont want to pay OR see ADs, then wonder why a sellout to yahoo happens… yahoo can monetize this website fairly easy… it’s sad that yahoo grabs up these properties before they can fully mature. its scares the crap outta me that the web will be dominated by only a couple giant monopolies.

yahoo just wants to track users across websites and services… who wants yahoo to track what they do on all these websites… what they post, etc. im sure yahoo contextual ads will be up very soon. yahoo has a way of pimping content to the extreme. look at their search – only 20% of the screen is search results, and how many of those are paid listings?

A number of people have asked about alternative bookmark sites. Nobody has replied. Here’s one: sitebar.org – basic but open source, Firefox friendly, and runs on your own server if you like. I can’t vouch for it yet, but I’m going to check it out, just in case delicious starts to throw unwanted ads at me.

I think the Yahoo relationship is great, but its another reason it would be nice to have the del.icio.us import feature back. Any tags I make in My Web 2.0 are stuck there. :-S Any ETA on this?

The nice thing about My Web 2.0 is that my technophobic relatives are less afraid to add a Yahoo feature to their My Yahoo page than an RSS feed from del.icio.us. (I know it can be done with del.icio.us too, but that’s what makes it a phobia–it’s irrational. The Yahoo name just make technophobes feel better.) But del.icio.us is still more robust–and has a better community–so I’d like to be able easily to get those tags back over here. Please?

Any ETA on this?

I have very mixed feelings about this. Yahoo Mail & Yahoo Groups are the best around, but I don’t want Yahoo controlling everything I use. I love the simplistic Del.icio.us interface, and no doubt that will change. Ads will come in, and then you’ll get the half page of commercial links and the top of every tag page – ARGGGH!

My main worry is that Yahoo will try to force you to use specific tag names, or worse automatically add links from your inbox into your own tags. That’ll be very ugly. They may even merge it with Yahoo Bookmarks and just have the tags thingy as an extra.

I’m seriously considering moving over to de.lirio.us. The trouble is that de.lirio.us hasn’t proven its self financially stable yet. The Del2Del conversion tool won’t work once Yahoo starts messing around with del.icio.us (you can guarantee it) so the time to decide is now.

I love del.icio.us. But i don’t like the user interface of yahoo. By joining yahoo, i hope that del doesn’t change to yahoo ui. Further yahoo’s addvertisments flash light, which i find irritating. Hope del doesn’t follow them, with regards to adds.

I think it’s a real shame.

I always have real trouble remembering my Yahoo user-id, probably because it’s not very obvious.

If I have to use a Yahoo user-id here then I’ll have to look for another alternative to del.icio.us.

yahoo is the death of all thats good on the internet.. i hardly use flickr now, and i think i can say the same for here as i (and several of my friends) have personal vendettas against yahoo’s blatant powergrab…

As long as nothing changes, I’ll be fine. I would have been much happier if it was Google, because noting by their homepage, it probably would have been cleaned up. I’m happy for the del.icio.us team, but I too am saddened that it was Yahoo. I’ll stick around for a bit and hope that things don’t change. As soon as Yahoo ads arrive I’m out. At least if they had’ve been Google ones you could’ve counted on them being inobtrusive.

Like I already said I’ve got very mixed felings about this. Judging by how Flickr works, you won’t ever be required to use a yahoo account, but yahoo accounts will work as well. Out of a choice of Yahoo, Google, or Microsoft I’m very glad it was Yahoo. Yahoo make good efficient services that work well, have a good UI and are the best around (eg Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Profiles). Google Search and Google Ads are better than Yahoo’s, but overall Yahoo are better. Microsoft ofcourse uses the worst UI’s ever (just look at Hotmail!) and knowing Microsoft they would have bought del.icio.us and just buried it to get rid of the competition! All in all I wish del.icio.us was still independant, but if it had to be bought up I’m glad it was Yahoo that did it. Keith.

well i just started del.icio.us recently and what i see now is very sad. Such a community and social tool can’t be sold out like this it’s simply wrong. There are so many ways of self sustaining a brilliant project like this.

I came across BlinkList the other day – http://about.blinklist.com/ – Looks like a good alternative to Del.icio.us, and they’ve got a supposedly good del.icio.us import script (I haven’t tried it yet). Maybe we could all use BlinkList to backup our bookmarks incase del.icio.us dies??

Google and Yahoo! are equally bad/good as you wish to see them, it all ends up to personal preferences, saying that one innovates while the other only buys is silly and naive. Both do what it takes to get the things done ahead and earlier than the other. It’s just like the windows-mac or iPod-everything else flame wars, there is really no point in stating things like “shame, now I’ll pack up my bookmarks and wait for google to come up with something”.

In the end there is benefit to all. While Yahoo! has scored big in acquiring delicious, Google is getting ready to come up with something probably better (because they will learn from delicious obviously) (probably Search History improved?) so you and me have a variety of services from where to choose.

I love delicious, but i dislike the Yahoo! mania to fill all with adds (and I don’t like the sound of “yahoo”), I preffer the Google approach, it seems more discrete and less intrusive. But I will use delicious until something better crosses my way, no matter if it’s from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo! or even a newcomer.

Congratulations, because it’s such a big achievement, getting noticed and merged (buyed) with one of the big guys, really, very good news to you.

For us, who knows? Maybe Yahoo! mantains all as it is, maybe they will fill it all with adds, we’ll have to wait and see.

While I have enjoyed yahoo’s services, I am remiss to accept the unavoidable acquisitions in recent past. The butchery that took place to Konfabulator, now Yahoo Widgets, was absolutely appalling. The worst thing about an acquisition is the loss of power and the conforming to lack standards. These grassroots programs and services like firefox and openoffice, sites like del.icio.us and craigslist all have common purposes, to enhance the user experience, to provide useful free services on a community base. If yahoo can provide these by an acquisition and offer their infrastructure without corrupting the vision of each individual project, then so be it. I’m just a little worried that every cool new site will be Yahoo! or Google owned. Will we really have control of that? Great site btw. Keep control of your project. Never sell out!
