6 Saint Nurses Sign Up for Nursing Degrees...“This is a Big Deal Internationally”
On Monday 26 September, 6 nurses from St Helena’s hospital embarked on a nursing degree offered online from Derby University, UK. Lisa Rhodes, Hospital Nursing Manager said that healthcare provision on the island has been modernised and nurses have had to adjust and up-skill rapidly to keep pace.
“This is a Big Deal Internationally”: The 200 mile nautical zone surrounding the island has now been designated as a marine protected area. The Environmental Protection Ordinance gave the island the power to be able to allocate the area and also adopt a management plan.

Building a Firm Foundation for Girls: Every three years the Girl Guiding Association on St Helena is visited by a Guide Trainer. Helen Smith from the UK recently arrived to the island for a two week training programme.

The Historic St James Church has a New Steeple: On Sunday 4 September 2016, AMD Engineering who is based in Rupert’s completed the project to install a stainless steel fabricated steeple on St James Church in Jamestown. The undertaking was the first of its kind on St Helena, and apart from invaluable assistance from Basil Read engineers whose expertise assured design correctness, it was completely local.

Dashing the Runway: Despite wind shear over 300 people gathered at the St Helena airport, for the first ever runway dash on August bank holiday. 107 people took part in the event with the youngest being five month old Issac Kellet strolling along in his buggy.
