Panorama of the Urban and Municipal Sector in India

Achin BIYANI, Romain FAYOUX, Dr. Ravikant JOSHI, Abhay KANTAK, Ram J. KHANDELWAL, Loïc PERRET, Ravi PODDAR

India’s urban transition will be a structuring trend of the next twenty years. Compared to the global average of 50%, India’s urbanization rate, just above 30%, is still low. However, its total urban population is already the second largest in the world after China: in 2011, India accounted for one in ten urban dwellers in the world. Based on the findings of eleven detailed case studies, this study aims to provide an introduction to urban governance in India and to highlight key insights into the institutional stakes of local urban development interventions.

  • The collection

The Focales collection was launched in 2010 by AFD’s Research Department. It aims to give accounts of the field experiences of AFD or its partners (experts, researchers, consultants, practitioners…) in developing countries.

The publications in this collection describe practical case studies (projects, experiments, partnerships…) and put them into perspective. They may also present reflection on a sectoral or geographical issue which is always supported by concrete results. They are intended to cover all the sectors and fields of action of AFD.
