Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
Vojvodina is the autonomous province of citizens who live in it and it is a constituent part of the Republic of Serbia. It is mostly a low-land area, intersected by
three navigable rivers – the Danube, Tisza and Sava, as well as a canal network, roads and railways, thus connecting the Central and Western Europe to the
Balkans and the Middle East. The most significant links are Corridor X for the road transport and the Danube-the Pan-European Transport Corridor VII for
the water transport. Vojvodina also has the oldest National Park “Fruška Gora”, the hills on whose slopes 17 monasteries have been built over the
centuries. Vojvodina is characterised by arable land of good quality, overall economic and cultural development, great population density and demographic
diversity. Vojvodina is a region which traditionally fosters multilingualism, multiculturalism and multiconfessionalism.
In the territory of Vojvodina, there are 45 municipalities and towns as local self-government units, organised in seven counties, with the seats in the
following towns:
Subotica, Zrenjanin, Kikinda, Pančevo, Sombor, Novi Sad and Sremska Mitrovica.
With 45,000 students, University of Novi Sad is the second largest university centre in Serbia. It offers special programmes, adopted to the demands of
economy, particularly the demands of the processing sector.
The main economic branches are: agriculture, processing industry, wholesale and retail, construction, energy, transport and communications, textile
industry, electro-mechanical and complementary automotive industry, ICT, business services, logistics and tourism.
Agribusiness
Agriculture is a priority sector in Vojvodina. Traditionally, it has always been a significant part of the local economy and a generator of positive
results, due to the abundance of fertile agricultural land which makes up 84 % of its territory. The share of agribusiness in the total industrial
production is 40%, that is 30% in the total exports of Vojvodina.
Renewable energy sources
Agricultural waste represents a significant source of biomass and great potential for its utilisation in energy production.
Metal processing and machine industry
Metal industry of Vojvodina has a long tradition and consists of smaller metal processing companies for components manufacturing and, to a lesser extent,
of original equipment manufacturers (OEM) with their own brand name products. Vojvodina Metal Cluster gathers 116 companies with 6,300 employees.
Information technologies
High- tech sector is a fast-growing sector in Vojvodina. Software development represents the main source of revenue, particularly development of ERP
solutions, Java applications and mobile applications. IT sector companies mainly deal with software outsourcing, based on demands of international clients
or with development of their own software products for purposes of domestic and international market.
Vojvodina
pays particular attention to interregional and cross-border cooperation, as well as to implementation of priorities defined within the EU Strategy for the
Danube Region.
