Species richness of Russia

The highest species richness — closest to the natural state and significant for the conservation of the Earth’s fauna and flora — is found in the following areas of Russia:

• Russian far east temperate forests;

• Caucasus-Anatolian-Hyrcanian temperate forests;

• European-Mediterranean montaine mixed forests;

• Altai-Sayan montaine forests;

• Ural mountains taiga;

• East Siberian taiga;

• Kamchatka taiga and grasslands;

• Daurian steppe;

• Fenno-Scandia alpine tundra and taiga;

• Taimyr and Siberian coastal tundra;

• Chukote coastal tundra;

• Volga River Delta;

• Lena River Delta;

• Russian far east rivers and wetlands;

• Lake Baikal;

• Bering Sea;

• Barents-Kara Seas;

• Northeast Atlantic shelf marine; and

• Okhotsk Sea.

Natural communities with a peculiar composition of species are usually formed in areas with an unusual combination of components of abiotic environment. An example is plant communities in areas where calcareous rocks occur close to the surface and/or crop out.
