New Moldavan pro-European coalition formed

On May 30 the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM), the Democratic Party (DP) and MPs  of the Liberal Party Reform Council, aka “LP reformers”, have decided to form “a governing pro-European coalition” and to vote for a new Government of Moldova.

The leaders of the three organizations – ex-Prime Minister Vlad Filat (LDPM), ex-Speaker of the Parliament Marian Lupu (DP) and parliamentary LP reformers chairman Ion Hadarca –signed an Agreement on the formation of the governing coalition.  The new coalition will have 53 mandates in the 101-member Parliament of Moldova, thus managing a narrow majority.

There are four new persons in the new Government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration will be managed by Natalia Gherman ,Moldova’s chief negotiator in the relations with the EU. Monica Babuc (PDM), who was adviser to the Speaker until recently, will lead the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry of Youth and Sport will be headed by Octavian Bodisteanu (LP  reformers), who was deputy minister until now, while the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure will be managed  the new Transport Minister Vasile Botnari (DP)former Air Moldova director.

The deputy chairman of the PDM Igor Corman will be suggested for the post of Speaker, the Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu said during the signing of the agreement on the formation of a pro-European coalition on May 30. A vote will be held in Parliament to confirm or reject Igor Corman. Marian Lupu was dismissed from the post of Head of Parliament on April 25 by 76 votes of the Communist, Liberal-Democratic and unaffiliated MPs.

The Communist Party wanted early elections, which have been prevented by the election of the new Cabinet. The European Union has repeatedly urged the Moldovan authorities to overcome the political deadlock and elect a new cabinet as soon as possible which could continue the reforms that are meant to bring the system in line with the European standards.
